Gen Taiko pursues a broad community development strategy in carrying out its mission, working closely with organizations and institutions.


Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC)

Gen Taiko's classes are under the auspices of JCCCNC's Resident Artist program and GT is an active partner in shaping the on-going children and family programming at Children's Day, Oshogatsu and Soko Arts Festival. 

National Japanese American Historical Society (NJAHS)

For the past few years, Gen Taiko has performed regularly at NJAHS events.  Taiko is an essential experience in the history of Japanese Americans.

Nihonmachi Little Friends (NLF) (multicultural daycare/after school center)

Gen Taiko has performed at NLF's annual fundraising concert for over 5 years.

Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC)

Gen Taiko gives taiko instruction twice a month at Chibi Chan Daycare managed by JCYC.

Japantown Merchants Association

Gen Taiko is a key participant in the Merchants' Association annual Obon Festival.

Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program (JBBP) at Clarendon Elementary (SFUSD)


Gen Taiko has returned to Clarendon each year to provide taiko instruction and production support for Performing Arts Night. Many of Gen Taiko's participants have been students at Clarendon.

Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program West (JBBP West - SFUSD)

Beginning at the DeAvila site in 2002 and now at the new JBBP West site Gen Taiko is providing instruction in taiko and minyo forms.  The 2002 program was an Exemplary Arts Program of the California Arts Council.

Chinatown Beacon Center
and Asian Improv Arts

Gen Taiko is collaborating with Asian Improv in a residency team made up of Melody Takata, Jimmy Biala and Lenora Lee at the Jean Parker Elementary School site of the Chinatown Beacon Center.  The purpose of the residency is to teach youth participants at the CBC percussion and dance integrating Afro-Brazilian and Japanese cultural forms.  This program is supported by a grant from the San Francisco Art Commission's Programs In Communities.

Discover Nikkei

The mission of the Discover Nikkei website is to promote cross-cultural understanding and to foster greater linkages between peoples throughout the world by making accessible resources and materials related to the Nikkei, people of Japanese descent who have migrated and settled throughout the world.
